Add to albumThis clay tobacco pipe bowl was found at Pitlethie in Leuchars in Fife. It dates from the late 17th century and was possibly made by William Young of Edinburgh.
The bowl is marked 'W/Y'.
The first Scottish-based manufacturer of clay pipes was William Banks, established in the Canongate by 1622. He, his sons and a few other makers in the Canongate and Leith supplied the needs of smokers in the Edinburgh area and beyond until the early 18th century.
