Brooch

This silver penannular brooch was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was a valuable brooch, worn between 80 and 180 AD.

The sharp edges of the rectangular-sectioned rod used to form the hoop of the brooch have been notched to give the impression of plaited wire. One terminal is missing and the pin has become detached.

Brooches were used to fasten clothing, and are understandably a common find on Roman sites. Penannular brooches are relatively common, ranging from simple examples to more elaborate ones, such as this object.
