Soup plate

This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.

The pattern is called 'HAWKING'. The plate's centre shows a lady on horseback and two male figures passing in front of a medieval castle. The lady and one of the men are carrying hawks. The border pattern consists of three panels containing a summerhouse and swans.

Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
