made in Netherlands
This brass candle box belonged to the Steuarts of Coltness in North Lanarkshire. It was made in the Netherlands in the 18th century and was designed to be hung on the wall.
The decoration on the box is typical of the Low Countries at this time. There is also a punched trade or maker's mark.
Candle boxes were used to keep candles cool and dry. They were unusual in a Scottish context, and were more typically found in warmer climates.
