Trade token (obverse), Halfpenny, of John White, Leith
This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of John White of Leith, a dealer in tea and gin. Dated 1796, the token was manufactured by Kendrick.
The obverse depicts a sailing ship on the left and a small rowing boat on the right. The surrounding text reads 'SUCCESS TO THE PORT/17 OF LEITH 96'.
Leith was Scotland's principal port until the mid 19th century. It dealt in grain, flax, sugar, timber, iron, paper and whisky. It became an independent burgh in 1833 but, despite fierce local opposition, was amalgamated with Edinburgh in 1920.
