Banknote (pull), from Company of Scotland

In printing, a pull is a proof taken on a hand press. This example, undated and unissued, is from an original plate for a banknote for the Company of Scotland. It dates possibly from around 1880.

The text reads, 'I promise to pay unto...or the Bearer...pounds ster at demand for the Company of Scotland trading to Africa and the Indies.'

The Company of Scotland, later known as the 'Darien Company', was granted the right to issue notes from their foundation in 1696, but no original notes survived.
