Tawse

A tawse was a leather belt used in schools as corporal punishment to strap children across the hand and most teachers had one.

Occasionally the tawse might be given a name. The tawse in Niddrie Marischal Secondary school was called "Big Bertha" and was in use by Mr Stevens in 1965.

Leather tawse photographed was last used, rarely, by Mrs Evelyn Tulloch.

Corporal punishment remained a feature of Scottish schools until the later 20th century.
