BowlThis ceramic dish was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was made in the Thames estuary area of southeastern England between 140 and 180 AD. The bowl is of a type known as black burnished ware 2 (BB2), a kitchen ware made in the Thames estuary area of southeastern England. An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
