From Newstead, Roxburghshire
This piece of leather was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It clearly shows stitching marks, although its use remains obscure. The piece dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The Roman army in Britain was involved in the preparation of leather and the manufacture of leather objects. Evidence of leatherworking has survived at Catterick and Vindolanda in northern England, including specialised tools for preparing hides.
