Small bronze penannular brooch

This small bronze penannular brooch was found at Gogar Burn in Midlothian. It is a type of brooch popular in Eastern Europe, especially Finland, but not common in the west, and unique in Scotland. It dates from between 850 and 975.

The ring of the brooch is decorated with stamped triangles forming hour-glass shapes. Polyhedrals stamped with ring and dot decoration form the terminals and are also placed on the body of the ring. The pin is plain.

The Viking world stretched from eastern Canada to the Middle East, with traders moving objects throughout these areas. One route led from the Arabic world, north into Russia, across the Baltic to Scandinavia, and from there to the west.
