It was probably obtained in Italy and taken back to Scotland as a pilgrim's souvenir between 800 and 1250 AD. Whetstone of 'verde antico', found near the ruins of St Salvador Chapel, Shapinsay, Orkney, between 800 and 1250 AD 'Verde antico' is a green porphyry floor and wall covering used by Roman and Byzantine rulers in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean.
