Add to album

This pair of metal sugar crushers dates from the 18th century. The crushers were used to break and crush sugar which was originally sold in large cones.

The sugar cutters have spade-shaped ends and are marked 'R. Timmens and Son'.

Tea became popular in Europe around 1700. By the end of the century it had become a common drink and the demand for sugar to sweeten the tea increased.
