Candleholder and lamp
This combined lamp and candleholder was found in moss at Kilminster, near Wick in Caithness. Made of sandstone, it dates from the 17th century.
It has a square central depression and four holes for candles at the corners.
Candles were made from wax or tallow - mutton fat or pig fat, or less commonly, beef fat.
