Add to album

This iron candleholder is from Wigtownshire. It dates from the 18th century.

The candleholder consists of a horizontal arm with drip pans at either end, one containing a candle socket, the other, three spikes. The arm is attached to an upright by means of an L-shaped arm and a spring. The upright is riveted to a tripod stand.

Candles were made from wax or tallow - mutton fat or pig fat, or less commonly, beef fat.
