from Hillhead of Enzie, Banff
This adjustable hanging candleholder is from Hillhead of Enzie in Banff. Made of iron, it dates from the 18th century.
The candleholder has a ratcheted upright and a shallow drip pan.
It is thought the candle was introduced to Britain by the Romans. From then until the second quarter of the 19th century, it remained the most widely used form of artificial light.
