Candleholder

This iron candleholder was found at Lochmaben Castle in Dumfriesshire. It dates from the 16th or 17th century.

The candleholder has a twisted stem riveted to a tripod stand.

It is thought the candle was introduced to Britain by the Romans. From then until the second quarter of the 19th century, it remained the most widely used form of artificial light.
