made in Germany
This candleholder consists of a hollow silver ball containing an open cup with a candle socket. It was made in Germany in 1702 by Jens Ulrich.
The cup housing the candle socket swivels on two loops. The whole is encased in a ball consisting of two semi-circles with pierced nautical and mythological scenes within roundels. There is a loop for suspension.
Candles were made from wax or tallow - mutton fat or pig fat, or less commonly, beef fat.
