Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates examples of day wear and evening wear and is dated 6 August, 1887. The outfits include the large, but fashionable, bustle. It consisted of a kind of projecting shelf of wadding or wire around which the dress could be built. Shaped rather like a lobster pot it could be pushed aside when the wearer sat down. From 1885 until 1888 The Queen's fashion plates were made up of a selection of ten or twelve large imported French plates, reduced into one large plate.
