This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Der Bazar, an illustrated ladies' magazine published in Berlin. This plate illustrates a wedding dress and a day dress and is dated, September 1887. It is signed with the initials, 'B.S' and the monogram, 'HGB'.
The waistline of these dresses is tight fitting and extends to a long point. The bustle is quite exaggerated, tending to arch up and out from the back. The skirts are draped and trimmed at the back into elaborate bouffants.
Fashion plates of wedding dresses appeared in most of the notable fashion magazines every three or six months. They are a quick and easy way to show how fashion trends changed.
