Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from August, 1900, the plate illustrates a day dress and hat. It is signed with the initial, 'D'. The style of this period was not comfortable to wear. Necklines were very high with collars lined and boned. Skirts were close fitting with rigid corsetry. Long bodices were narrow on the ribcage. Colour-printed fashion plates had begun to appear by the late 1880s. By the end of the 19th century, they had almost superseded hand-coloured plates. A few publications continued to issue hand-coloured plates into the early years of the 20th century. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
