This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from July, 1900, the plate illustrates a day dress and hat.
The smooth front of this dress is achieved by the insertion of gores (tapering pieces of cloth) in the back, just about at the level of the top of the thighs, thus creating a small train.
Colour-printed fashion plates had begun to appear by the late 1880s. By the end of the 19th century, they had almost superseded hand-coloured plates. A few publications continued to issue hand-coloured plates into the early years of the 20th century.
