published in Paris
This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1897, the plate illustrates a wedding dress and a day dress. It is signed, 'Cholet'.
The style of this period was not comfortable to wear. Necklines were very high with collars lined and boned. Skirts were close fitting with rigid corsetry. Long bodices were narrow on the ribcage.
Colour-printed fashion plates had begun to appear by the late 1880s. By the end of the 19th century, they had almost superseded hand-coloured plates. A few publications continued to issue hand-coloured plates into the early years of the 20th century.
