This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1881, the plate illustrates two evening dresses with trains. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'I. Desgrange'.
The dress skirts and bodices are elaborately trimmed with lace and flowers and the skirt line is broken by puffs, shirrings and swathes of material. By 1880, dresses were still tied-back, but trains were mostly reserved for evening dresses such as these.
Isabelle Desgrange (née Toudouze) was the daughter of Adèle Anaïs Toudouze, one of the most prolific and popular fashion plate artists of the mid-nineteenth century. Isabelle also produced plates for Le Follet, Le Monde Elégant and The Queen.
