Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1865 and illustrates two examples of 'Travestissements' or fancy dress costumes.
The outfits have an historical theme. The lady on the right has an ermine stole draped over her arms.
The 19th century fashion magazine contained many suggestions for fancy dress. The fancy dress ball was one of the occasions when women could be outwardly frivolous. Originating about the time of Waterloo, they were extremely popular.
