Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Sylvia's Home Journal, a magazine published in London. The plate illustrates day wear for two women and a young girl and dates from around 1881. It is signed, 'A.Bodin' and 'E. Préval'.
The line of these 'tie-back' dresses is broken by puffs, shirrings and pleats. The 'egg-timer' look is achieved by corsetry, boning and lacing up the back.
It was customary for good quality French plates to be imported by other European publishers and given descriptions in the appropriate languages. Bodin was a French engraver in the period 1843-70 and Préval was one of the most prolific fashion plate artists of the 1860s.
