Fashion plate, from Le Magasin des DemoisellesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Magasin des Demoiselles, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate shows six examples of summer hats and bonnets and is dated 10 April, 1885. In the 1880s, hats and bonnets were worn perched high on the head or titled to one side. The hair was pulled into a large bun at the back of the head which was placed high at first but lower down later in the decade. The hair at the front and sides was frizzed or crimped. Le Magasin des Demoiselles was in publication from 1844-93. One of its more notable fashion plate artists was Anaïs Toudouze. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
