Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Gazette Rose Illustrée, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1882, the plate illustrates two 'Toilettes de Courses' - outfits for a day at the races. It is signed, 'Jules David', 'Bonnard' and 'Vve. Gauthier Coloriste'.
The bustles on these outfits are quite exaggerated and tend to arch up and out from the back. The skirts are draped and trimmed at the back into elaborate bouffants. The lady on the left carries a fringed parasol.
In the 1870-80s, parasols were elaborately decorated with embroidery, lace, flowers, ribbons and tassels. The stick and handle were often carved, with bows attached. The very smartest parasols had handles at the reverse end and were carried upside-down.
