Fashion plate, from Corriere delle Dame
This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Italian fashion magazine, Corriere delle Dame, published in Milan. The plate is from a series entitled, 'Moda di Parigi' and is signed, 'Gandini'. It illustrates two women in evening dress and is dated 1 March, 1862.
The woman on the right is wearing a mantle - a loose, sleeveless cloak or cape.
In the 1860s, skirts reached their maximum width, making dresses expensive because of the increased material used and time taken to make them up. The artificial hooped cage or crinoline (introduced in 1856), helped support the huge skirts.
