Fashion plate, from Corriere delle Dame
This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Italian fashion magazine, Corriere delle Dame, published in Milan. The plate dates from 25 August, 1837 and illustrates a woman wearing a day dress and a bonnet. The plate series is entitled, 'Moda di Parigi'.
There is a second bonnet on a stand to the left. These wide-brimmed bonnets were known as 'poke' bonnets.
The majority of dressmakers at this time were guided by designs from Paris. The same features appeared, with only slight variations, in outfits from countries with very different backgrounds.
