Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one in a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and is dated 5 May, 1840.
The plate illustrates a lady's and young girl's outfit - both suitable for a day at the races. Its title is 'Modes de Longchamps'.
Longchamps and Auteuil are racecourses in the Bois de Boulogne - a 2,140 acre park planned along English lines by Napoleon and situated on the western edge of Paris. The racecourse lawns were ideal settings for displaying the latest fashions.
