This earthenware 'monteith' bowl is based on the shape of 18th-century silver punchbowls known as monteiths. It was made in the late 19th century at Peter Gardner's pottery at Dunmore in Stirlingshire.
The footed bowl has a scalloped rim and is marked 'Dunmore'.
Peter Gardner took over his father's small redware pottery in 1860 and immediately began to develop new ranges of fashionable wares. Dunmore pottery relied on unusual shapes and spectacular glazes for its effect.
