From Threave Castle, Kirkcudbrightshire
This carved wooden disc is from Threave Castle in Kirkcudbrightshire. It was probably used as a gaming piece. It dates from the 14th or 15th century.
The disc has a six-leaved motif carved on one side, and three circles inscribed on the other.
Threave Castle was built in the late 14th century on a small island in the River Dee. It was a stronghold of the Black Douglases, one of Scotland's most powerful medieval families.
