Plate

This wooden plate is from Threave Castle in Kirkcudbrightshire. It dates from the 14th or 15th century

The plate bears the Douglas motif - the heart - burnt into the base. The heart is featured on the family's coat of arms, upon their seals, and upon their Standard.

Threave Castle was built in the late 14th century on a small island in the River Dee. It was a stronghold of the Black Douglases, one of Scotland's most powerful medieval families.
