Add to albumThis is the obverse of a copper proof halfpenny trade token of Anderson Leslie & Company of Edinburgh. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Wyon.
The obverse depicts a public building with 'NEW/UNIVERSITY' underneath. The surrounding text reads 'EDINBURGH HALFPENNY PAYE BY ANDERSON LESLIE & Co'.
The building represented is Edinburgh University's 'Old College'. Designed by Robert Adam, the building was begun in 1789 and completed in 1818-1834. Today this building is the administrative centre of the university as well as holding the Faculty of Law.
