Add to albumThis demonstration apparatus, known as 'Philosophical Fireworks' was used to give spectacular demonstrations of burning gases. The apparatus was made in London around 1730 by W. & S. Jones.
The apparatus consists of an elaborate set of brass multiple gas jet burners in a fitted mahogany box.
A larger version of the apparatus is known to have been shown in Edinburgh's Theatre Royal in 1791.
