Armchair of carved oakThis carved oak armchair is from Dunfermline Palace in Fife. It dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. The chair has spiral uprights with early rococo decorative twirls. The ornamentation includes a crown motif - introduced to celebrate the Restoration - and an 'S' embellishment, known as the Flemish scroll. In the 16th century, the abbey guest house at Dunfermline was converted into a Royal Palace. At the time, new ideas about comfort were beginning to affect the interiors of houses, which had previously been relatively plain and sparsely furnished.
