Banknote, One pound (unissued) by Sir William Forbes, James Hunter & Company

This one pound banknote is of the private bank of Sir William Forbes, James Hunter & Company. Made payable to Robert Borrowman, the note was not issued and the number, date and signature remain incomplete.

The vignette at the top is of Parliament Close in Edinburgh.

Scotland had few private banks compared to England. This highly respected firm began issuing notes in 1773. Despite a merger with the Glasgow Union Bank in 1838, it carried on under its own name until the creation of the Union Bank of Scotland in 1843.
