Coin (reverse), Denarius, of SafraThis silver denarius was minted in Rome in 150 BC. The cognomen, or nickname, of the moneyer (Safra) is recorded on the coin, but his identity is otherwise unknown. This picture shows the reverse of the coin. The reverse depicts Victory holding a whip in her right hand and the reins in her left, while driving a vehicle called a biga. Below is the inscription 'SAFRA', signifying the moneyer's nickname, and 'ROMA', denoting the mint at Rome. In or around 211 BC a new coinage system was introduced in Rome. The silver issues were based on the denarius, and its fractions the quinarius (half denarius) and sestertius (quarter denarius), and the victoriatus.
