This is the obverse of a silver medal of the Ross-Shire Rifle Association. Made in Edinburgh by Peter Westren, the medal was presented in 1887 to the winner of the Ladies Challenge Cup.
The obverse is inscribed, 'Presented by the Ross-Shire Rifle Association to the winner of the Ladies Challenge Cup 1887'.
The sport of rifle shooting grew in popularity after 1860. Almost exclusively confined to the middle classes, it was one of the few sports in which women participated.
