Coin (obverse), penny, from reign of James VI & IThis is the obverse of a penny minted at Edinburgh in 1614, during the reign of James VI & I. The coin was made of copper and was worth one penny Scots. The obverse bears a thistle. The Latin inscription translates as: 'James, by the Grace of God, (King of) Great Britain'. The coins of James VI's reign are considered to have the most beautiful designs and most varied legends of all Scottish coins. After the Union of the Crowns of 1603, Scottish gold and silver coins closely resembled their English counterparts. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
