Coin (obverse), farthing, from reign of Robert I ('the Bruce')

This is the obverse of a silver farthing minted between 1318 and 1329, possibly at Berwick, during the reign of Robert I ('The Bruce'). The coin was worth a quarter of a penny Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned head with a sceptre. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Robert, by the Grace of God'.

It is thought that no coins were issued in Robert's name until shortly before 1320 - 14 years after he had inherited the throne. The minting of Robert I coins at this time may have been linked to the recovering of Berwick by the Scots from the English.
