A mazer is a communal drinking cup. This cover is for the 'Bute' or 'Bannatyne' mazer associated with Robert I ('The Bruce'). The mazer dates from around 1315, the cover from the 16th century. The cover is made from bone from the jaw of a whale.
The top side of the cover has a five-sectioned pattern. This consists of pellet ribbing and floral roundels, overlying an interlace design featuring groups of leaves. There is a central silver knop which passes through a cinquefoil shaped plate.
The mazer was made soon after the Battle of Bannockburn, possibly to celebrate a gathering at Rothesay of Robert the Bruce's supporters.
