Fragment of tartan associated with Prince Charles Edward Stewart
Add to album

This fragment of tartan is from a kilt worn by Prince Charles Edward Stewart in 1746.

The text above the fragment reads 'Piece of Prince Charlie's kilt left by him in the House of Campbell, Island Glass, 30th April 1746'. The envelope underneath is addressed 'Isabel' and has 'Bits of Prince Charlie's kilt' written in the top left corner.

Escaping from Culloden, Charles was sheltered in Arisaig by Angus MacDonald of Borrodale. Angus's wife, Catriona, provided the prince with a tartan outfit '...the better to disguise him and make him pass for one of the country'.
