Trade token (obverse)

This is the obverse of a metal halfpenny trade token. It was made in Glasgow in 1791.

The obverse is inscribed with the Glasgow coat of arms surrounded by the motto, 'Let Glasgow Flourish'.

In the second half of the 18th century trades and companies began issuing trade tokens to alleviate the shortage of short change. The tokens circulated locally and could be used to buy goods or could be redeemed by their issuers for regal coinage.
