Add to albumThis is the obverse of an 1895 bronze medal commemorating David Livingstone.
The obverse depicts the head and shoulders of Livingstone surrounded by the text, 'David Livingstone born Blantyre 1813 - died Ilala 1873'.
Livingstone first visited Africa in 1841 and quickly became involved in exploration. A persistent opponent of the slave trade, he believed the only way to rid Africa of this activity was to open up the interior to 'Commerce and Civilisation'.
