This silver christening mug was made in 1842 by Marshall and Sons of Edinburgh. The mug is decorated with five inset 'Gothic' niches containing cast medieval figures.
The straight-sided jug has a cushion foot and an elaborate double 'C' scroll handle. The five inset 'Gothic' niches on the body of the mug each contain a cast figure in medieval costume. The inside of the mug is gilded.
The 'Gothic' decoration on the mug was influenced by the contemporary vogue for medieval romances.
