From Banks of River Allander, near Milngavie, Dunbartonshire
This stoneware inkwell was found on the banks of the River Allander near Milngavie in Dunbartonshire. It dates from between the 13th and 15th century.
The salt-glazed inkwell has a globular body and two suspension lugs at the neck for hanging from a belt.
In medieval times, all books and documents were written by hand, usually by churchmen. This made churchmen the guardians of information and learning. Those who wished to learn to read and write went to the Church for education.
