Saut bucket

This redware saut (Scots for 'salt') bucket was made in 1871 at Cumnock Pottery in East Ayrshire.

The bucket has a moulded hen on a nest and is marked 'From Cumnock Pottery 1871'.

A pottery was originally established in Cumnock by James Taylor in 1794. In the second half of the 19th century, it became well known for its 'couthy' motto ware. Cumnock Pottery was in existence for a total of 128 years from 1792 until around 1920.
