This parchment diploma and wax seal are of the Royal Company of Archers. Dated 1826, the diploma records the membership of Laurence Butters, a lithographer.
The outside of the diploma is engraved with an archer in Highland costume. The text around the edge of the wax seal reads, 'The Common Seal of the Royal Company of Archers at Edin'.
The Royal Company of Archers is the oldest sporting club in Great Britain and was founded in 1676 as The Company of Scottish Archers. By that time archery had lost its purpose in war and had become a sport.
