Communion plate, of Wester Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh

This pewter communion plate is from Wester Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. It was made in 1723, probably by John Storey, a silversmith in London. The plate held the pieces of bread which represented the body of Christ during the communion ceremony.

The plate has a wide rim and a shallow base. The rim is engraved with 'For the Waster Grey Friers Kirk 1723'.

In Presbyterian churches communion usually took place once or twice a year. Those considered worthy by the elders were invited to sit round a table to share bread and wine, representing the body and blood of Christ.
